Day 92: Halley – The Easter Bunny?

GRACIE

Day 92: Halley – The Easter Bunny?

I have a friend in Chicago who has a cat named Gracie. Whenever I sent Alex pictures of Christmas, Easter or Halloween decorations, she always wonders how everything stays so neatly in place with cats around. She adds that, with Gracie, this would not be possible. Gracie would destroy such a meticulous setup within minutes.

I always told her the same … my cats don’t touch the decorations. They will look at them, they will sit with them, but they don’t knock anything over. They don’t even touch them.

All that changed when Halley joined the family. This is Halley’s first Easter and the first time she sees Easter decorations. She does more than just looking and sitting with them though … she rearranges. Have a look at these before and after shots …

Does Halley object to the yellow chickens? Does she feel there should be a bunny? Is it possible that she is of the opinion that she is a bunny? Whatever her motivation, she had no problem pushing the big chicken out of her way and slapping the little chickens off their feet.

And it’s not just Easter decorations. Anything that lies on the coffee table, on the corner table or anywhere else sooner or later takes a dive.

It all starts very innocently. She sits on the coffee table, spots an object, takes a closer look and ever so carefully touches it with one of her front paws. When it doesn’t fight back she touches it again, this time with more confidence. Next, she moves it a little, and a little more and if I’m not there to stop her, within no time whatever it is goes crashing to the floor.

So far she's had it on with my lipstick, a USB stick, a pen, a coaster, a spoon, a bracelet … it really doesn’t matter, if it’s on the table, Halley will send it to the floor.

Right now, because of her size, she can’t jump on cabinets and counters yet, but as she grows older and bigger she will no doubt broaden her horizon and then Lord help us all. I already fear the worst for when Christmas comes around.

Anyway, now I understand why Alex is so reluctant in decorating her home on special occasions and I’m sure when she’ll read about Halley and sees the pictures she’ll nod with a smile and think … welcome to my world.

Happy Easter + finches update

Happy Easter to all my faithful readers across the world.
Did the Easter bunny surprise you with any chocolate eggs? I certainly hope so.

A short while ago I saw a post on Facebook where a woman stated that she had received healthy snacks from the Easter bunny. Unless you’re a diabetic, which she is not, healthy snacks have no place at Easter. Not for adults and not for kids. Have you ever heard something so ridiculous? Healthy snacks for Easter … whatever next?

These health nuts are really pushing it too far. You can’t have this, you can’t have that, this is bad for you and that is bad for you and blah blah blah. Yet look at them … they are allergic to this and that, the wind blows and they get a cold and in general, their immune system is so weak that they get affected by all kinds of ailments.

Older generations in comparison are strong healthy individuals. They eat, drink and smoke and waltz through life without a care in the world. Just this morning I read that the oldest woman alive, born and raised in Italy, died at the age of 117. Do you think she ate healthy snacks? My guess is she never even heard of such a thing. And if she did, dismissed it with ‘queste sciocchezze’.

I remember back in my day, my brother and I used to stand in front of the window on Easter morning, peering into the garden to spot any eggs. Armed with a plastic pot we would venture out and look under shrubs and behind trees to collect the eggs. There usually was quite a selection of white, brown and black ones for us kids, and a big, beautiful cellophane wrapped one for mom.

This morning I found an egg myself. Not a chocolate egg but an egg laid by Mrs. Finch. Regular readers might remember that a couple of finches built a nest on my balcony. I promised that I would follow up on the story so here it is … so far one egg in the nest.

Why does Easter keep changing

Good Friday is a day I have a problem with. Christians the world over are supposed to remember this day as they day when Jesus Christ died, but when exactly did he die?
This year we remember the tragic event on March 25th, but let’s have a look at other years.

2015 – April 3rd
2014 – April 18th
2013 – March 29th
2012 – April 6th

How are supposed to properly pay our respects when the date keeps changing?
Yes I know, the date of Easter is based on the lunar calendar. When I looked it up on Google, I got the following explanation:

Unlike a lot of Christian feast days, Easter does not have a fixed date. The feast is based on the lunar calendar, so Easter is scheduled to fall on the Sunday that follows the full moon on or after March 21, also known as the Spring Equinox

While this might be a perfectly rational explanation, to me it makes no sense. How can one remember the most important death in history, but keep moving it around?

Let’s have a look at some other historical figures:

Cleopatra – August 12, 30 BC
Julius Cecar – March 15, 44 BC
Nero June – 9, 68 AD
Augustus – August 19, 14 AD
Leonardo DaVinci – May 2, 1519
Galileo Galilei – January 8, 1642

If someone was able to record these dates for future generations, why mess with Jesus Christ his death? If it was, for instance, April 5th it should always be April 5th, regarding of which day that date happens to fall on.

We are equally wrong when we observe a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m., the time Jesus supposed to have died. To be correct, on the East coast of the United States and Canada, this moment of silence should be observed at 8:00 a.m. as Jerusalem is 7 hours ahead of America’s east coast.

I find it mind boggling that throughout history people have drawn and written what was important to them, but nobody made an accurate notation of the date of Jesus Christ his death. Or did they and was this date conveniently “lost”.

It is generally known that Constantine, together with 300 religious leaders decided what information was included in the Bible, and what was not.

If this type of information was lost, it poses the question what else was hidden from the world.

Can cats count? An Easter experience.

It was a glorious Easter Sunday morning.  It had been raining on and off for the entire week, but now that Sunday was here the sun decided she had been in hiding long enough and poured her golden rays over the Easter egg hunt in our neighborhood.

How to make an Easter basket

On Easter morning, children get out of bed eager to find out what the Easter bunny has brought them.  However, receiving something special is not just for children, adults enjoy giving and receiving too.

To create a themed Easter basket all you need is knowledge of the person you want to give the basket to and then go shopping.

A basket does not even have to be a traditional wicker basket, it can be anything: a flower pot, a soup bowl, a glass container, a baking tray, or even a laundry basket.

If the ‘basket’ is wrapped in cellophane, held together by pink or yellow ribbon and decorated with a few Easter eggs or flowers, it will not only be original but beautiful.

Homemade Easter Decorations

Just as millions of people decorate their homes for Christmas, so does Easter ask for creating a little atmosphere for the occasion.  To be original or to save money, you can make Easter decorations yourself.  It is fun, it is easy and it is something to do with the kids.

Most of what is needed you will already have around the house and where it comes to fun little projects like this, there will be no shortage of eager little hands to help either.

Meet Kiki

Kiki

Easter has come and gone and with it a lot of bunnies are looking for a home.

It’s quite common for children to fall in love with these soft, adorable creatures and to beg their parents “Please can I have a bunny?”  When a couple of more ‘pleases’ follow the question, parents tend to give in, either to silence their child or because they fancy the pet too.

After a few days it’s a different story.  Providing food and water for bunny might be considered fun, but cleaning its cage is anything but.  Unlike cats and dogs, bunnies make a mess and to prevent the situation from getting out of hand, bunny’s living conditions need a lot of attention.

The result … kids are no longer interested in their cute pet and the parents get sick and tired of cleaning up after it.  Before long the parents decide that the bunny has to go.

Where ones pet stores were crowded with bunnies, now animal shelters get flooded with them.

Fortunately, there are people who are willing to open up their heart and their home to these rejects.  Most of them have considered such adoption for some time, have researched a bunny’s requirements and know about the work involved.  When they feel they’re ready, they adopt from a shelter rather than buying at a pet store.

Kiki is one such a rejected bunny.  Wanted with Easter, no longer wanted a few days later.  Fortunately, we were at the right place at the right time and were able to rescue one little bunny from a life in a shelter or worse.

As Kiki grows up, I’ll keep you updated with stories and pictures.
