Day 26: Writing - Easy ways to make time to write

My Project: 365 Creative Writing Prompts
Day 26: WritingGive advice to writers

Easy ways to make time to write

Writers are notorious procrastinators.  Those with a full-time job might argue that they don’t have much time to write, while those who stay at home might find that there are too many distractions. Productive writers have one thing in common, they make time to write.

One of the first things to do is to know what keeps you from writing.  It could be that you would like to spend more time writing but that you, in the name of research, get easily distracted by everything that’s available on the Net.  Maybe you prefer reading over writing.  It could be that you watch too much television or that you are a notorious napper.

If you get easily distracted, you need to set goals for yourself. If you can write one or two articles per day, great, that’s thirty-one or sixty-two articles per month and that’s nothing to sneeze at. By setting goals for yourself that you can actually achieve, you encourage yourself to do more, rather than facing disappointment by setting your goals too high.

Keep a notebook and pen handy.  Inspiration can come anytime, any place, but unless you can jot something down, an idea, phrase or impression might quickly disappear. Preference should be given to a book over scraps of paper as those might easily get lost.

A fast and easy way to help you in your writing is a Dictaphone. This tiny tape recorder can be used in the car, in a coffee shop, in the park, or any other place where you might find inspiration.  While dictating you don’t have to worry about typos or correct grammar, you can just talk and type up your ideas later.  Someone else can even do the typing for you. Your spouse or children might welcome such a project to practice their typing speed and accuracy.

You will know best whether you are a morning or an evening person. If you are at your most productive in the wee hours of the morning, try to get up an hour early to write.  If you’re more of a night owl, wait until everyone has gone to bed and the house is quiet to devote some time to write. If you have a full-time job, use your lunchtime to write.

You can use your laptop and run off battery power; your iPad loaded with a writing programme such as ‘Pages’ or use pen and paper. Writing longhand may actually be beneficial to your writing.  Many writers claim that typing influences their creativity and they write better using a pen.

Leo Tolstoy used to write sitting in the market square. If it worked for him it might work for you.

Feel free to comment. I'd love to hear from you.

Need a laugh?

Susan Jasper shared a little something from Quotes Etc. this morning.  What I read made me laugh and shake my head in wonder.

ONE

Recently, when I went to McDonald's I saw on the menu that you could have an order of 6, 9 or 12 Chicken McNuggets.
I asked for a half dozen nuggets.
'We don't have half dozen nuggets,' said the
teenager at the counter.
'You don't?' I replied.
'We only have six, nine, or twelve,' was the reply.
'So I can't order a half dozen nuggets, but I can order six?'
'That's right.'
So I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets
(Unbelievable but sadly true...)
(Must have been the same one I asked for sweetener,
and she said they didn't have any, only Splenda and sugar.)

TWO

I was checking out at the local Wal-Mart with just a few items and the lady behind me put her things on the belt close to mine. I picked up one of those 'dividers' that they keep by the cash register and placed it between our things so they wouldn't get mixed.
After the girl had scanned all of my items, she picked up the
'divider', looking it all over for the bar code so she could scan it.
Not finding the bar code, she said to me, 'Do you know how much this is?'
I said to her 'I've changed my mind; I don't think I'll buy that today.'
She said 'OK,' and I paid her for the things and left.
She had no clue to what had just happened.

(But the lady behind me had a big smirk on her face as I left)

THREE

A woman at work was seen putting a credit card into her floppy drive and pulling it out very quickly.
When I inquired as to what she was doing, she said she was shopping on the Internet and they kept asking for a credit card number, so she was using the ATM 'thingy.'

(Keep shuddering!!)

FOUR

I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car. 'Do you need some help?' I asked. She replied, 'I knew I should have replaced the battery to this remote door unlocker. Now I can't get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience store) would have a battery to fit this?'
'Hmmm, I don't know. Do you have an alarm, too?' I asked.
'No, just this remote thingy,' she answered,
handing it and the car keys to me. As I
took the key and manually unlocked the door, I
replied, 'Why don't you drive over there and
check about the batteries. It's a long walk....'

PLEASE just lay down before you hurt yourself !!!

FIVE

Several years ago, we had an Intern who was none too swift. One day she was typing and turned to a secretary and said, 'I'm almost out of typing paper. What do I do?' 'Just use paper from the photocopier', the secretary told her. With that, the intern took her last remaining blank piece of paper, put it on the photocopier and proceeded to make five 'blank' copies.

Brunette, by the way!!

SIX

A mother calls 911 very worried asking the dispatcher if she needs to take her kid to the emergency room, the kid had eaten ants. The dispatcher tells her to give the kid some Benadryl and he should be fine, the mother says, 'I just gave him some ant killer......'
Dispatcher: 'Rush him in to emergency right away'

Life is tough. It's even tougher if you're Stupid!!!!
Someone had to remind me, so I'm reminding you too.
Don't laugh....it is all true...

Time management

Some blogger I am. My last entry is dated November 2nd, which means I haven’t written anything in two weeks. Has life really been that boring or have I been super busy with other things? A little of both I suppose.

There was a time that I sat up until all hours of the night, but now that I’m working (for the past three months and one week I might add) I have to be in bed at a certain time.

Of course working gets in the way of blogging too. Not only is there not a moment to spare to put a blog entry together, but at the end of the working day blogging is not exactly at the top of my list.
I usually come home bone tired. After a change of clothing and a short rest with a cup of coffee, there are chores to be done and dinner to be made.
After dinner and some TV there are email messages to be read and replied to and a farm to tend to, a farm at Farmville I mean. Ah yes, who is not playing that game these days? I’m at level 61 with limited crops, but more animals than I can handle.

And soon I will be having even less time. Yesterday we went to pick out wallpaper for the bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom and I’m the one who is going to do the papering. I’ve done it before, you could say I’m an old hand at wallpapering so I don’t foresee any problems, but still, it will take time so there will be even less time for blogging. How do other people manage? Do they have a time schedule? If you know something I don't, I'd love to hear from you.
