Day 48: Be careful what you wish for

Do you ever wish that you didn’t have to go to work? That you didn’t have to do laundry or cook and do the dishes? I think all of us, at one time or another, have wished for something along those lines.

Just the other day, while serving dinner, I thought … I wish someone else did the cooking. Somehow food tastes so much better when someone else prepares it. Maybe I shouldn’t have thought that because I got my wish.

I happened on Friday. I hurt my back and while initially I only felt a tiny pinch in the small of my back, I know from experience that it would get worse. By 6:00 p.m. the ‘pinch’ had turned into an inconvenience and when Dieter asked if I would be able to bowl on Saturday morning I knew for a fact that I wouldn’t be able to. But I resolved that I would go to the bowling alley with him anyway. The walk might do the muscles of my back good.

By 10:00 p.m. I was in agony. Not only would there be no bowling for me, I wouldn’t be able to walk to the alley either. Trying to remedy the situation I applied an ice pack to my back. It had no effect.

I hoped that a good night sleep would have me feeling better, but no such luck. On Saturday morning, I crawled out of bed and shuffled to the living room. It was so bad I couldn’t even shower and believe me, for me to skip my shower it has to be bad.

“Maybe a heating pack will help,” Dieter suggested. Okay, I was in so much pain I would try anything. He popped a gel pack in the microwave and when I applied it to my sore back I think my lower back muscles were the happiest muscles in my body. The pain was far from gone, but at least I had some relief.

And so now it’s Sunday night and I’m still in pain. Dieter has taken care of all the house chores, he cooked, he did the dishes, made coffee, etc. And what have I done? Nothing, absolutely nothing. All I can do is sit in a chair, occasionally shuffle to the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, and sit down again.

So I got my wish, I got someone to cook for me, but believe me it’s no fun. So, be careful what you wish for as you just might get it.
